Series on the Mass – Week 2
Gathering as God’s People
Last week, we began exploring the meaning of the Mass, reminding ourselves that we are not spectators but participants in the great mystery of God’s love made present in the Eucharist. We reflected on the Entrance Procession-a symbol of our journey as God’s pilgrim people, led by the Cross toward Christ.
This week, we focus on the Introductory Rites-the sacred doorway that prepares our hearts, minds, & spirits to enter into the mystery we celebrate.
1. The Sign of the Cross & Greeting:
The Mass begins “In the name of the Father, & of the Son, & of the Holy Spirit.” This simple gesture reminds us who we are & whom we belong to. The greeting, “The Lord be with you,” is not a mere hello, but a holy exchange-recognizing Christ’s presence among us.
2. The Penitential Act:
Before approaching the altar, we pause to acknowledge our sins & our need for God’s mercy. Like washing before a special meal, this act cleanses our hearts so we can receive God’s Word & Eucharist worthily-not as perfect people, but as forgiven ones.
3. The Gloria:
On most Sundays, we joyfully sing “Glory to God in the highest!”-an ancient hymn echoing the angels at Jesus’ birth. It expresses the gratitude & joy that naturally flow from hearts touched by God’s mercy.
4. The Opening Prayer (Collect):
When the priest says, “Let us pray,” a brief silence follows. In that moment, we bring our personal intentions to God. The priest then gathers (“collects”) all our prayers into one, expressing the theme of the day’s celebration.
Together, these opening moments help us transition from the busyness of life into the sacred presence of God. They unite us as one community, humble us before His mercy, & open our hearts to His Word.
So next time you come to Mass-make the Sign of the Cross with devotion, respond with faith, pray sincerely, & sing joyfully. Because from the very first words-“In the name of the Father, & of the Son, & of the Holy Spirit”-God is already drawing us into His saving love. To be continued…..
Blessings of Peace and Joy Always!
