St. Mary's Parish

On August 15, 1853, a group of settlers in the small community of Carlinville laid the cornerstone for the first Catholic church in Macoupin County.  This small brick structure, located on West Second South Street, was a testament to the faith of the early settler in this area.

A History of St. Joseph Catholic Church

St. Joseph's Parish

After the storm which destroyed the Irish Catholic church under constructions, the German Catholics of the community decided to establish their own parish.  The reason for this was that they could have scripture readings, sermons, & confessions in thier native language.  Construction began the summer of 1868 with the cornerstone being laid on July 7 by Bishop Juncker.

The Mass of Dedication of a Church and an Altar was celebrated March 24, 1996, at 4:00pm with the Most Rev. Daniel L. Ryan, Bishop of the Diocese of Springfield in Illinois, officiating.
